Reframing the Worship Conversation: Content, Structure and Style

In this workshop we will answer four questions: 1) Is worship for God or for man? 2) Do we initiate worship or does God initiate it? 3) What makes our worship specifically Christian? And, 4) What does our worship reveal about our theology, the Church's mission, and the personhood of God Himself? We need to reframe the worship conversation away from the usually untheological arguments on style we find in North America toward reflection on content, structure and style with a hospitable posture toward a global perspective.

A Vision for Worship

We all long to see our churches alive and passionate in worship. To see our gatherings explode in life, color and creativity. To see people encounter God in a way that leaves them changed forever. But how can we lead and develop a culture of worship in such a way to see this vision become a reality? Join the Worship Central team as they explore a renewed vision for worship and discuss both practically and spiritually, from their own experiences, how as leaders we can step out to see this happen.

Biblical Worship: Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs

Scripture suggests a convergence of three kinds of voices in sung worship. “Psalms” keep our own stories centered in God’s story. “Hymns” unite us in the whole church’s celebration of the fact that Jesus Christ is the center of history. “Spiritual songs” remind us of the freshness of the Lord’s moving ... in our lives right now, in our particular church right here. Presentation vs. Performance: Where's the line?

There’s a tension that exists in every worship leader and worship musician to present songs in a relevant, compelling way without drawing unhealthy attention to themselves. We differ from performing artists in that we want to be excellent musically, but for the spotlight to be on Jesus. How do we find this balance? Are there elements of performance that are good for worship? How can sound and lighting be a help and a hindrance to authentic worship? We will discuss this topic from a whole-band perspective with much input from the class.

Knowing we want our selections to tell a balanced story of God and be inclusive for maximum congregational participation makes choosing even tougher. Together we will examine 10 steps toward a spiritually healthy criteria for song selection in congregational worship. Though certainly not required, if you can bring a recent song set or the titles of your top five worship songs or hymns, that would be beneficial (or a web enabled device for on the spot searches).

What is Environmental Projection?

It’s all the rage these days, but there are so many dangers and ways to do environmental projection poorly. Let’s show and tell about how to do it well, how to not break the bank, and why it’s not simply shining a projector on the wall. My heart is to make it tangible for everyone; I want this class to be encouraging and exciting as you begin to think of your worship space as a blank canvas to paint on. I encourage attendees to bring pictures of their worship space, so we can go over the possibilities one-on-one during the class and conference.

Gospel-centered worship is transformational. The communal act of worship, with God as the object of our worship, will lead to communal and personal discipleship, not only on Sunday mornings but throughout the week. From the weekly corporate gathering, centered on Word and Table, to small group fellowship and study, family devotions, and our individual interior devotional life centered in prayer, study, and Christian action, worship that is joined to the ceaseless worship of the Trinity transforms the heart.
